IFE(C) installation and parts

Around 90% of passengers bring a mobile device on board and expect to use it. We install the wireless IFE you have chosen into the aircraft you already have — server restraining kits, wiring, antennas, placards and the certified parts around them.

In short

The system itself is the easy part. What decides whether a wireless IFE retrofit works is where the server sits, how it is restrained, how antennas and wiring are routed, and which placards have to change because of it. That installation layer is what we do — neutral on the platform, with the certified hardware around it supplied under EASA Part 21G.

What is included

Four parts of an IFE retrofit

A wireless IFE project is rarely one order. These four pieces usually arrive as four suppliers — here they are one.

Server restraining kits

The server unit lives in an overhead bin. Our kits hold it in place and separate it from passenger luggage, so the hardware does not consume the whole bin. Built to the aircraft: base plate with guard rails, strap kit, fasteners and an overhead bin divider assembly.

Installation and wiring

Server units and cradles, wireless access points, bin divider plates, cable routing and securing, and window antennas on each side of the aircraft. On the LEAV A320 our cabin team built the complete wiring infrastructure and tested everything down to the last connector.

Portable kits for wet lease

A wet-lease aircraft is expected to offer the cabin service of the airline whose passengers are on board. Portable systems do that for the length of the contract and come off again afterwards — the same kit logic, without a permanent installation.

Short-term and long-term

Placards, parts and documentation

Every installation changes something written on the aircraft — a modified stowage limit, for example. Those placards and markings are updated as part of the project, and we supply cabin items such as head rest covers, safety cards and EEL cards with the documentation they need.

The commercial side

Digital retail in the cabin

An IFE platform is a cost until it earns something. We came into this business from the advertising side, which is why we look at both.

Alongside the installation we commercialise IFE platforms: relevant content during the flight, advertising and retail formats, inventory management and take-up rate optimisation. As pioneers in IFE(C) retail we have developed models such as real-time retail with domain whitelisting, and our approach stays tech-neutral so it scales with whichever platform you run.

LEAV A320: entertainment and lighting in one go

On the A320 D-ANNE our cabin team built the complete wiring infrastructure, installed the AirFi LEO units with their window antennas on each side of the aircraft, and tested everything down to the last connector. In the same visit the cabin lighting was replaced with the liTeMood system from STG Aerospace.

Inside the work

What a restraining kit actually does

The hardware is small. The consequence of fitting it badly is a bin your passengers cannot use, on every flight, for the life of the fleet.

WITHOUT A KIT SERVER Hardware and luggage share one space. The unit slides, and the bin is effectively gone. WITH OUR KIT SERVER A divider keeps the rest of the bin usable. Base plate, guard rails and straps hold the unit in place.
Schematic, not to scale. A kit is built to the aircraft: base plate with guard rails against sliding, Velcro restraining straps, fasteners, and the overhead bin divider assembly — supplied with an EASA Part 21G Form 1 or a Certificate of Conformity.

The real thing: a server unit in its kit, strapped down and labelled to the aircraft it belongs to.

Cabin lighting is often done in the same visit: colours and scenes for the different phases of a flight.

Questions we get asked

IFE, answered before the first call

Which IFE providers do you work with?

All the wireless ones — Inflight Dublin, AirFi, Bluebox and PXcom among them. We are deliberately neutral on the system: you choose the platform, we make it work on the aircraft. If you have not chosen yet, we can say what each one means for bin space, antenna positions and wiring effort.

What is in a server restraining kit?

A base plate with guard rails that stop the unit sliding, Velcro restraining straps, the fasteners, and where needed an overhead bin divider assembly that keeps the rest of the bin usable for luggage. Each kit comes with an EASA Part 21G Form 1 or a Certificate of Conformity; the exact composition depends on the aircraft.

Does an IFE installation need a modification approval?

Where the installation changes the aircraft, yes — then it runs as an EASA Part 21J Minor Modification, produced with our Part 21J DOA and Part 21G POA partners or under your own Part 145 authority, with the material supplied under Part 21G. Portable kits for short-term operations are a lighter case. Either way the affected placards, such as a modified stowage limit, are part of the same package.

Can this be done on a wet-lease aircraft?

That is one of the main reasons operators come to us. A portable IFE system gives a wet-lease aircraft the cabin service of the lessee airline for the length of the contract, without a permanent installation. The same range covers the opposite case: durable, permanent installations for aircraft that stay in your fleet.

Can you install cabin lighting at the same time?

Yes. On the LEAV A320 the AirFi LEO installation and a full LED lighting replacement with the liTeMood system from STG Aerospace ran in the same visit. If the cabin is open, doing both is faster than coming back.
